Greenhouse Benches Built

I continue to grapple with some really bad weather here.  The rain held off just long enough for me to at least build my new benches.  It is funny; there is a learning curve to everything.  After using a greenhouse now for a few summers, I finally figured out the ideal bench for Hoyas.  The top shelf is much narrower to allow for tall plants to go on the bottom shelf in the front.  It also allows for large hanging plants to hang way down if a smaller hoya is kept on the bottom shelf.  It took about five hours and around $140.00 to build these cedar benches.  I’m still hoping for a Saturday liftoff for building the greenhouse!

Greenhouse Base is Down

Well the good news is that my Sunshine Greenhouse kit has been delivered; the bad news is the weather here has been very uncooperative – high winds, cold, and rain!  I did manage to get the base screwed down to the deck.  Tomorrow, I will try to build  some of the benches, as the weather is not supposed to greatly improve until Saturday.  If all goes well, that is the target date to assemble the kit (video to follow)!

Hoya revoluta is Now Blooming

Hoya revoluta took over four years to bloom for me the first time.  It is a very hardy plant that will live anywhere you want to put the plant, but to bloom needs very bright light.  I captured these photos before the flowers had fully reflexed.

New Hoya kerrii Photo

I’m on vacation this week, and it is currently raining so instead of trying to assemble my new greenhouse, I’m taking photos.  Here is a new one of Hoya kerrii, and make sure you check out the Best Photos section of this website for more great pictures of Hoya kerrii blooms.

Hated To Do It, But…..

I really hated to do it, and I know that some people would give their eye teeth for imperialis blooms, but I could no longer deal with the mess.  These flowers were dripping nectar on everything – the window glass, and sills, the floor, all over itself and the neighboring plants.  If this plant were outside, no problem, but in the house it would draw Ants at the very least.  I cut all the blooms and remaining buds off from the plant and put them in this bowl.  Here is that photo and one of a leaf covered in sticky nectar.

It’s Hoya kerrii Time!

Here are two photos of a Varigated Hoya Kerrii – One shows a bloom that is completely buried in the leaves and very hard to get a photo, and one shows developing buds and leaf.
