I took the plunge and ordered a small 6X8 Redwood greenhouse like the ones I used to have in Waterville. I will not have an ideal location for it, but I thought I would give it a chance anyway. I was getting so tired to setting up the temporary tent greenhouses for my 3 1/2 month outside growing season, and taking them down every fall, that I thought I would try at least one of these. Here is a photo of all of the boxes on the pallet after the truck driver left the it in our driveway. There will be lots of installation photos to follow over the next few weeks.

Growing Hoyas in Temporary, Tent-Type Greenhouses
Here is a little video that I made showing one option for growing your Hoyas outside over the course of the summer if you meet certain criteria like having ample shade.
Pictures From the Greenhouse July 6, 2012
Here are three photos from the greenhouse last night. Click on any to see full-sized. They are the same old bloomers for me, but nice to see them blooming outside of the plant-room in more of a natural environment.
New Greenhouse is Small, But I Pack a Lot Into It!
Here is a Photo showing my new greenhouse, which is only 48 square feet (6’X8′) full to capacity.
Most Plants in Greenhouse Starting to Show Signs of Life!
It happens every year; I put the plants into the greenhouse and it takes at least a month for them to start growing. They are very slow to move from their winter hibernation mode. I would say that I can now see movement in around 70% of the plants. Why do I go to all of the work to move these plants outside, risking insect infestation, sun-scald, and the elements? I do it because when they finally start growing, they grow like crazy and build up huge energy stores that would not be possible inside the house. Hopefully I will get a few first time bloomers out of all the effort, but the energy that is stored up will pay dividends all winter long.
Potting Bench is Built!
Well, my big plans for a time-lapse video of the construction of my potting bench fell apart. I had the focusing distance on my time-lapse camera set at the wrong setting so everything was blurry. In lieu of the video I am adding this slider so you can see the potting bench from different angles. It is completely made of left over material that I had kicking around. It should be a joy to use, as I have always had to lug a heavy table outside to do my potting on. The green insert came from Amazon and is meant to use on a table top, but I never really used it until now. The bench was constructed so that it would drop right in. I’m pretty pleased with it; I also added the rod so that I can work on hanging baskets.

Greenhouse is Almost Finished!
Greenhouse Benches Built
I continue to grapple with some really bad weather here. The rain held off just long enough for me to at least build my new benches. It is funny; there is a learning curve to everything. After using a greenhouse now for a few summers, I finally figured out the ideal bench for Hoyas. The top shelf is much narrower to allow for tall plants to go on the bottom shelf in the front. It also allows for large hanging plants to hang way down if a smaller hoya is kept on the bottom shelf. It took about five hours and around $140.00 to build these cedar benches. I’m still hoping for a Saturday liftoff for building the greenhouse!
