Hoya mindorensis (First Bloom)

Here is Hoya mindorensis with its first bloom.  I have to say I’m kind of excited about it, as I have really struggled with this species over the past five years – It does not seem to like Vermont!  I will be setting up a page devoted to this Hoya with hopefully much better photos of it over the next few days.

Best Way to Send Cuttings Through the Mail

After reading about sending cuttings through the mail using florist’s flower vials on the Hoya Cubit Forum, I thought I would give it a try.  I sent a number of cuttings to a great Hoya friend in the UK, and after 2 weeks in transit, the cuttings look almost as good as the day that I cut them!  This method of shipping cuttings need to become the de facto method.  It is worth the minimal costs of these little contraptions to ensure the safe arrival of these plant cuttings.  Attached is a photograph of the cuttings in vials after two weeks taken by Julie Kennedy in the UK.  The vials work well on cuttings of all size.  Even the (notoriously hard to ship) thin leaved campanulata traveled well!

New Hoya motoskei Photos

Hoya motoskei is one of my top 10 easy to grow Hoyas for growers in the the colder regions of the world.  This plant needs no special attention and will reward you with beautiful, fragrant blooms several times during the year.  Here are a couple of photos from an hour ago.

Two New Photos of The New Greenhouse

Here are two new photos of my new greenhouse taken from this morning.  The timelapse video to the entire construction project should be posted to You Tube over the weekend.  I think that it will really be fun!  You can see the exhaust fan that I added to the house and the secondary roof.

Just Counting the Days!

I’m just counting the days until I can kick all of these Hoyas outside.  It will be a large undertaking, but after it is all done, it will be worth the effort.  Here are a couple photos from this week – a cute little carnosa bloom cluster and a photo of Hoya pachylada, which is starting to bud up.  This plant is now around 4-5 years old and 18″ tall.  It is very heavy and needs good staking to stay upright.

Greenhouse is Almost Finished!

New greenhouse is almost finished.  I have much more to follow on this procedure  in the coming weeks including a new Learning How Production on setting up controls in the small hobby greenhouse, and a time-lapse video of the entire assembly process from start to finish.

Snowed All Day Today

It snowed all day today and tomorrow looks like it is going to be sunny, but very cold and windy.  The greenhouse may have to wait until Sunday.  Spent the last couple of hours taking the best photos that I could of Hoya pubicalyx ‘Purple Hybrid.’  Here are a couple, but please check out the others in the Best Photos Section of this Website.  Hoya pubicalyx may be as common as all get out, but I don’t think anyone would argue that it is also one of the most beautiful!
