I’ve been told that Hoya thomsonii likes growing in self-watering pots.  I have always wanted to experiment with it, but never seemed to get around to trying it out.  H. thomsonii has always been prone to both over and under watering since I have owned the plant so I would have to say that a  self-watering pot is probably the way to go.
