Growing Hoya rintzii Part One

I knew nothing about this Hoya going in and that was probably a mistake. I found out later that it is in the Mindorensis Hoya complex, and H. mindorensis has always given me nothing but trouble, because I simply cannot give it warm enough temperatures. It was not long after potting up Hoya rintzii that I needed to take cuttings and start it over because of root rot.

Let’s Talk About Hoya rintzii

I received Hoya rintzii as a rooted cutting from AH Hoyas of Thailand in May of 2017. It came in fairly nice shape, but was rooted in coco husk, which often posed problems for me. I put it into a 2 inch net pot and hoped for the best. Below the buds of Hoya rintzii:

Real Oddity Here

Once again Hoya amicabilis failed on me; this time in leca using passive or semi-hydro. The roots rotted yet again. Anyway, I am trying to root a number of cuttings and one of them produced 4 peduncles that all started to bud up. The photo only shows 3, but there is another on the back side of the plant. I just cut them off, because I wanted the cutting to put energy into forming roots and not trying to save itself by flowering.

Hoya linearis Flowers Before Death

I knew that this was the wrong time of the year for Hoya linearis to flower. After taking this photo of the flower. I investigated the roots of this one grown in leca using passive hydroponics. The roots were completely rotted away. I threw the plant and media away in disgust. Don’t worry about me losing the plant as I have pots of this growing everywhere in the house. They are growing in soil, which is the only way that I will grow it from now on.

Hoya blashernaezii ssp siariae Flowering From Tiny Cutting

Hoya blashernaezii ssp. siariae is a plant that I am currently trying to save and don’t know if I will pull it off or not. Here is one of the last rooted cuttings that I have of it, and it put out a peduncle and flowered rather than the new growth that I desired. Note the sun stressed leaves, which could be hindering it putting out a new vine.

Odd Time of The Year For Hoya linearis To Flower

Hoya linearis generally flowers here in Vermont in October, so this is an oddity. I think that this plant which is grown in leca and is not happy is trying to reproduce before it dies. This is another plant that grows far better for me in soil than using passive hydroponics. The picture was not very good so I textured it to make it more interesting.
