Hoya calycina was discovered in Papua New Guinea in 1913; Hoya calycina ‘Stargazer’ was brought to market in 2005. In 2006, 27,500 plants were traded through Dutch auctions, and the numbers increased in subsequent years. Can you imagine standing in line at Home Depot, or at the supermarket and finding a beautiful Hoya calycina ‘Stargazer’ plant in full bloom at the checkout counter! I don’t know if sales of these plants were confined to the Netherlands, or all of Europe, but I know I have never seen one on this side of the pond.
