I’m not in the habit of writing book reviews for this site, but I just have to talk about this wonderful find. Latin for Gardeners by Lorraine Harrison is a very readable, informative and beautifully illustrated book that will help unravel the mysteries of botanical Latin. One of the best features of this volume is the pronunciation guide that can help people like me sound out some of these wonderful words! There are over 3,000 botanical, Latin terms explained with other cool features like profiles of important plant hunters (I especially like the one on David Douglas of Douglas Fir fame!). While Hoyas are not prominently featured, there is an illustration of Hoya carnosa, and terms such as lacunosa and halophilus are explained. The book is hard cover with a built in book mark, and all of this can be yours for a little over $15 from Amazon. This book should be in every plant enthusiast’s collection!
